AmeriCorps

On August 1, 2008, R2LP will begin its fourth year of AmeriCorps, welcoming 30 new members and 5 returning, second-year members. This year's team begins R2LP's second grant cycle with the Corporation for National and Community Service. Since 2005, the Corporation has funded R2LP to hire 30 full-time AmeriCorps members every year. R2LP's is one of the largest AmeriCorps programs in the state.  AmeriCorps members provide support for literacy programs in the Providence Public Library, enhance literacy programs in select Providence child-care centers, assisti instructors in R2LP professional development programs, and work with R2LP staff members to integrate its AmeriCorps program with R2LP’s larger initiative.

This Year's AmeriCorps members will be placed at the following sites:

Beautiful Beginnings Child Care Center
Bishop McVinney Child Care Center
Brown/Fox Point Early Childhood Education Center
East Side/Mount Hope YMCA
Federal Hill House Early Child Learning Center
Genesis Center
InTown YMCA Kids World
John Hope Child Care Center
Pawtucket Day Child Care Center
Providence Head Start (5 locations)
Providence Public Library (5 locations)
Salvation Army Child Care Center
Urban League Child Care Center
West End Child Care Center

Members are also placed at R2LP.

Members at the Providence Public Library work as Early Literacy Outreach Aides. They work toward increasing the number of families and family child-care providers who use the library, and they participate in the library’s early literacy programs.

AmeriCorps members also work directly with family child-care providers to enhance instructional expertise. These volunteers play a critical role in the delivery of the HeadsUp! Reading program, an R2LP professional development program for early-care providers in Providence. AmeriCorps members collaborate with program facilitators and serve as HeadsUp! Reading coaches. In addition to their work in the classroom, AmeriCorps members visit the settings of family-care providers to help providers integrate newly acquired skills into their curricula.

A third component of the program places AmeriCorps members in select child-care centers in the R2LP target neighborhoods. Working under the guidance of highly skilled center directors and head teachers, the AmeriCorps members serve as Early Literacy Activity Coordinators, designing and leading activities that help elevate the role early childhood literacy plays in the overall curriculum. Participating centers embrace R2LP’s efforts to implement Rhode Island’s Early Learning Standards and to incorporate early literacy practices into daily activities.

In addition, AmeriCorps members work as volunteer coordinators, devoting their time to R2LP’s volunteer recruitment and management efforts and helping to integrate the AmeriCorps program into the organization’s larger initiative.

AmeriCorps members' service begins in August and concludes in June. The first month of service takes place in the offices of Ready to Learn Providence, where members receive extensive training and build valuable skills. At the end of their service, members not only walk away with a wealth of skills and experience, but also a $4,725 educational award. The living allowance members will receive for the 2008/2009 year of service is $11,200. For more information contact Nazly Guzman, Director of AmeriCorps, at 490-9960.
